When I went to uni, I noticed and was a bit taken aback by that many people who are intelligent in the sense that they can learn difficult things, are often surprisingly stupid. Never mind the idiots who do fake subjects - these people were doing hard subjects like maths and chemistry, but their mental and intellectual flexibility was that of single purpose scripts. This got me to view being smart as the ability to use the intelligence you have in an effective manner, both in specific applications _and_ broadly. Most of those people were _not_ smart.
I see the umlaut in your name and I immediately think of Germans, because german students in in particular tend to be what you've described - highly intelligent, but rigid and inflexible, unadaptable.
